Former Newport Harbor Pitcher Dead at 69

Frank Hamilton, a left-handed pitcher who was a member of Newport Harbor’s 1948 league championship baseball team, died Friday of cancer in Fort Walton Beach, Fla. He was 69.

Hamilton, who was born in Kansas, Miss., was a senior at Newport Harbor in 1948. He was 11-1 with a school-record 112 strikeouts as the Sailors won the only baseball league title in school history.

After attending Stanford and Kansas, he served two years in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper. He began his career as a draftsman and designer with the Santa Ana-based Gates Burrows firm in 1956 before becoming a freelance artist.

BASEBALL

Travis Ingle, a left-handed pitcher at Cypress High, has committed to attend Cal State Fullerton next fall, Centurion Coach Mark Steinert said. Steinert said Ingle also considered Arizona, Texas, Florida and Long Beach State.

Ingle was 8-3 with a 3.50 earned-run average last season. In 60 innings he gave up 46 hits, walked 45 and struck out 87. A first-team all-league selection, he helped Cypress finish third in the Empire League.
