John Vanbiesbrouck has consecutive shutouts and the Philadelphia Flyers have hope again, thanks to the New York Rangers.

Vanbiesbrouck made 20 saves as Philadelphia shut out the Rangers for the second time in three nights, 2-0, Friday night at New York.

Vanbiesbrouck’s second shutout of the season and 37th of his career helped the Flyers to their third straight win and sent the Rangers to their third straight loss and fourth in five games.

“We’re still a team that’s 3-5-1, and we’re trying to do our best,” Vanbiesbrouck said. “These are games that are tough to win. You’re coming into a tough building to win in.”

The Rangers, who were manhandled by the Flyers in Wednesday’s 5-0 rout, came out with intensity and showed their mettle by getting into two fights before seven minutes were played. And though both teams left the ice scoreless after the first period, the Rangers felt they made a statement.

“I thought in the first period, we played well,” Ranger Coach John Muckler said.

Penalties hurt the Rangers in the second period.

Four seconds after killing a penalty, New York gave up the eventual game-winning goal to Daymond Langkow. Defenseman Dan McGillis sent a slap shot from the right point toward the net. Ranger goalie Mike Richter made the save, but the rebound went to Langkow, alone in the lower right circle. He sent a wrist shot under the crossbar at 8:11.

Dallas 2, New Jersey 1--Sergei Zubov’s 35-foot slap shot 32 seconds into overtime lifted the Stars at Dallas.

Pavel Patera passed from the end boards to Zubov, who scored on a one-timer from just beyond the top of the right circle.

Brett Hull’s power-play goal at 13:33 of the second period lifted the injury-depleted Stars into a 1-1 tie.

Calgary 3, Florida 2--Derek Morris scored 20 seconds into overtime at Sunrise, Fla., as Calgary’s Grant Fuhr became the sixth NHL goaltender to win 400 games.

Valeri Bure scored twice for Calgary, giving him eight goals this season. His brother, Florida right wing Pavel Bure, missed his fourth consecutive game because of a strained groin.

Fuhr made 29 saves and improved his record to 400-286-113.

Buffalo 7, Carolina 3--Geoff Sanderson and Erik Rasmussen each scored twice as the Sabres won in a rout at Buffalo.

Martin Biron made 17 saves in place of benched goaltender Dominik Hasek and Michael Peca scored his first goal of the season for the Sabres (1-5-2), who hadn’t won since Game 4 of the Stanley Cup finals.

The Atlanta Thrashers activated left wing Vladimir Vujtek and put defenseman Maxim Galanov on the injured reserve list because of a broken left wrist. Vujtek was put on injured reserve Sept. 18 after suffering a facial cut that required 200 stitches during an exhibition game against the New York Rangers.
