Enrollment at Los Angeles Unified Schools, the country’s second-largest public school system, rose 2% from last year--the fifth year in a row that student population has increased, officials said Monday.

The increase of 14,044 students brings the enrollment for kindergarten through 12th grade to 711,187, officials said.

This year’s gains include 7,575 more elementary school students and 6,469 middle school and high school pupils. The largest increase was in the fourth grade, which has 4,422 more students than last year.

A district spokeswoman said the enrollment surge was driven by the county’s increased birthrate, as well as migration into the Los Angeles area. Statistics on the ethnic breakdown of the student population will be released later, she said.

Over the last five years, the number of students has increased by 75,000. Since 1981, the district’s K-12 enrollment has risen by more than 172,000.
