Mariners Announce Gillick as New GM
Pat Gillick, who led the Toronto Blue Jays to consecutive World Series titles, was named new general manager of the Seattle Mariners on Monday, replacing Woody Woodward, who resigned Sept. 23.
Mariner chairman Howard Lincoln praised Gillick as an experienced general manager, and “most important, he has a history of fielding championship teams.”
Gillick, 62, led the Blue Jays to titles in 1992-93. He also served as general manager of the Baltimore Orioles from 1995 until his retirement after last season.
Cincinnati Red Manager Jack McKeon talked to managing executive John Allen and General Manager Jim Bowden three days after the club made its first proposal for a contract extension, but he declined to reveal specifics of the team’s latest offer, saying he would “mull it over.”
