Halloween a Time for Profit-Chering

Cher and share alike.

That could be the motto of Dream Halloween’s sixth annual fund-raiser Saturday. A one-of-a-kind Cher doll--crafted by Mattel doll sculptor Frederick Jackson and wearing a Bob Mackie original--will go on the auction block at Santa Monica Airport’s Barker Hangar to raise money for the Los Angeles-based Children Affected by AIDS Foundation.

Last year’s Elizabeth Taylor doll was purchased by Demi Moore for $25,000, and a total of $1.2 million was raised for the group, which distributes funds to 17 nonprofit organizations around the country that provide direct care and services for children affected by AIDS.

Mattel’s Joe Cristina, the company’s vice president of inventor relations, established the foundation in 1993. “It’s just staggering what the impact of AIDS is having on children,” said Cristina. With the help of Mattel’s Chairman and Chief Executive Jill E. Barad and others, Mattel started Dream Halloween as a way to raise money and awareness for the foundation.

Mackie and Cher (who had final approval of her doll and asked that the hair be trimmed and the lipstick changed) are this year’s honorary chairs. Jamie Lee Curtis, who will be wearing a Mackie witch costume, returns as the event’s host.
