PREP FOOTBALL ROUNDUP
Downey Calvary Chapel 58, St. Margaret’s 31--After christening its new field with a touchdown on the game’s first play from scrimmage, St. Margaret’s couldn’t keep pace with Calvary Chapel’s running game.
Calvary Chapel gained nearly 600 yards on the ground, with three players running for more than 100 yards. Anthony Robinson and Corey Fitzgerald each ran for 171 yards; Robinson scored three touchdowns, Fitzgerald two.
Andreas Werner gave St. Margaret’s (3-4, 1-2) an early lead by scoring on a 78-yard run moments into the game. After Robinson scored on a one-yard run, the Tartans regained the lead, 13-8, when Rhett Swanson ran 25 yards for a score with 4:21 left in the first quarter.
The Grizzlies then scored on all three of their second-quarter possessions to open a 30-13 lead. The lone bright spot for the Tartans came on the last play of the half when Erik Hallenbeck kicked a school-record 52-yard field goal.
St. Margaret’s forced three fumbles in the third quarter but could convert only one of them into a touchdown, a 23-yard pass from Ryan Birtcher to Omar Shaban with 54 seconds left in the quarter.
“That’s a pretty good football team,” St. Margaret’s Coach Brady Lock said of Calvary Chapel. “We just couldn’t establish a running game today.”
