HIGH SCHOOL PREVIEW : PREP FOOTBALL GAMES AT A GLANCE

No. 5 Servite (0-0) vs. No. 3 Tustin (0-0)

7:30 TONIGHT TUSTIN HIGH

Thanks to special dispensation from the Southern Section, former Golden West League rivals Tustin and Servite get a jump start on the 1999 season, which for most schools starts Thursday. Servite, which has moved to the all-parochial Serra League, holds a 4-1 edge over Tustin. The Tillers return junior tailback Brandon Malcom, who rushed for 1,600 yards last season, but also has an inexperienced offensive line. Coach Myron Miller has high hopes for 6-4 junior tight end Chris Chester, and David Miller, the coach’s son, returns at quarterback. Servite Coach Larry Toner will start junior Adam Ernst, a converted receiver, at quarterback. Ernst would have played some quarterback last year but tore a tendon on the forefinger of his right hand during a practice and missed most of the season. He will operate behind one of the county’s bigger offensive lines--led by 290-pound senior tackle Joe McGuire. (In a story in today’s Prep Extra football preview special section, the date for this game was incorrect.)
