COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Chapman Has Little Trouble in Opener

Quarterback Stanley Villanueva passed for 203 yards and safety Mark Hastings had three interceptions, including one for a 64-yard touchdown, to lead Chapman to a 37-3 victory over Millsaps College Saturday in the Panthers’ football opener at Jackson, Miss.

Chapman’s Eric Del Conte also had a big day, catching seven passes for 105 yards.

Villanueva, making his first start with the Panthers, completed 13 of 22 passes without an interception. Tailback Phillip Cruz rushed for 86 yards in 14 carries.

In the UCI/Asics Cross Country Invitational:

Mintzlaff takes fourth--Oliver Mintzlaff of Concordia placed fourth at Central Park in Huntington Beach, finishing the 8K race in 24 minutes 47 seconds. He was 11 seconds behind the leader, Micheil Jones of Arizona. Jon Doroski was the top finisher for UCI, running 25:33 and placing 24th for the Anteaters. Bryce Lighthall finished first for the Titans, placing 32nd with a time of 25:56.

The UC Irvine women finished fourth overall. In nonconference men’s soccer:

Biola 2, UC Irvine 1--Shaun Cole scored in the 60th minute to lift Biola (3-2-1). Troy Wenger scored in the 10th minute to give Biola (3-2-1) a 1-0 lead. UCI (1-3) answered with a goal from Lawrence Smalls in the 39th minute. In nonconference women’s volleyball:

Alabama 3, Cal State Fullerton 1--Michelle Green led visiting Alabama (2--4) with 17 kills and 12 digs as the Crimson Tide won 16-14, 8-15, 15-13, 15-12. Jamie Ivers led the Titans (2-4) with 21 kills and 14 digs.

In nonconference men’s water polo:

UCLA 13, UC Irvine 3--The fifth-ranked Anteaters were unable to mount any offense until the third quarter. John Dorfi scored two goals for UC Irvine (0-1).
