BREA

Children skinning their knees on the dirt, asphalt and loose gravel of playgrounds will become a thing of the past at Brea Olinda Unified elementary schools when a softer surface is installed.

Guidelines and regulations to make playgrounds safer and accessible for people with disabilities are expected to become law by the end of the year. But Brea Olinda officials aren’t going to wait for lawmakers to make changes.

The district is going to spend about $120,000 to bring playgrounds at Arovista, Country Hills, Mariposa and Olinda elementary schools up to state and federal safety codes by early next year.
