Dino Andino of San Clemente and Richie Collins of Newport Beach advanced to the third round of the Newport Pro-Am Surf Contest at 54th Street in Newport Beach. Andino took advantage of three- to four-set waves to pull the day’s best wave score with a perfect 10. Also advancing were Gavin Beschen of San Clemente and Micah Byrne of Huntington Beach.
Dodo Cheney of La Jolla defeated Valentine Popel of Fargo, N.D., 6-1, 6-0 in the women’s 80 singles final of the Pacific Southwest Senior Tennis Championships n Newport Beach.
Glenn Turnbull of Newport Beach defeated Ed Doane of Tustin, 6-4, 6-2, to win the men’s 80 singles title.
Other championship winners included Verne Hughes of Laguna Hills in men’s 85 singles, Robert Howe of Santa Ana and Robert Willner of Palm Springs in men’s 70 doubles and Fran Busman and Vincent Fotre of Newport Beach in men’s 75 doubles.
