St. Francis’ nonleague game against Crescenta Valley started on a good note Friday night when senior lineman David Macauley sang a flawless national anthem.

“I think he’s probably more fired up for that than the game,” Coach Bill Redell said of Macauley, who played the lead role last year in St. Francis’ musical production of “Pippin.”

Principal Tom Moran found at least one advantage to having a lineman sing.

“If the microphone happens to fall off [the stand] he’ll be ready to pounce on it,” he said.
