Doug Hartman scored two touchdowns and safety Mike Argo returned an interception 56 yards for a score as Royal upset seventh-ranked Granada Hills, 23-21, in a nonleague game Friday night at Royal.

“This is a huge win for us,” Royal Coach Gene Uebelhardt. “Our kids did a lot of growing up tonight.”

Royal, which led 7-6 at halftime, used two interceptions to open up a 20-6 lead. Argo stepped in front of Jason Winn’s pass to Carlos Galindo in the third quarter and raced 56 yards up the sideline for a touchdown.

Moments later Royal defensive tackle Marshall Montazeri intercepted a screen pass and returned it 20 yards to Granada Hills’ nine-yard line. That set up Hartman’s second touchdown of the game, a four-yard run, to give Royal a 20-6 lead with 11:20 to play.

Winn guided Granada Hills to two late touchdowns, the second a four-yard pass to Eric Farlow with 32 seconds left. Royal’s Mike Carr recovered the ensuing onside kick.

Winn was 23 of 51 for 247 yards, with two touchdowns and two interceptions.

Royal, which played without quarterback Bryce Klenck, who was ill, won despite accumulating 141 yards in offense.
