* CAL LUTHERAN (0-1) vs. SAN DIEGO (1-1)

At University of San Diego, 7 p.m.

The Kingsmen came up short last week against Pacific Lutheran, which withstood a 20-point fourth quarter by the Kingsmen to win, 28-26. Cal Lutheran failed on a two-point conversion that would have sent the game into overtime. San Diego beat two-time SCIAC champion Whittier, 40-13, in its opener. George Keiaho rushed for 83 yards and two touchdowns in 15 carries in his first game for Cal Lutheran since transferring from Washington. Keiaho, who set several Ventura County rushing records at Buena High, will play an increased role as his sore hamstring heals. Dorian Stitt, a three-year starter, led the Kingsmen with 94 yards rushing against Pacific Lutheran. Chris Czernek, who transferred from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, replaced Nick Odenath at quarterback in the first quarter and completed 21 of 31 passes for 188 yards and a touchdown. Brothers Ryan Geisler of Cal Lutheran and Jason Geisler of San Diego are the kickers.

JUNIOR COLLEGES

* VALLEY (1-0) vs. GROSSMONT (0-1)

At Grossmont, 3 p.m.

Good news and bad news for Valley. Grossmont plays on what Coach Dave Jordan calls “the worst field in the United States.” That’s no lie, says quarterback Akili Smith, who signed a $56 million contract with the Cincinnati Bengals and was a junior college All-American at Grossmont. Smith has pledged an unspecified but supposedly generous amount to help build a stadium. On the positive side for Valley, the Griffins hardly resemble the team that beat Bakersfield, 38-32, in the Potato Bowl in December. They have only two returning starters and their defense features nothing but freshmen, which showed in a 47-27 loss to Bakersfield last week, when Grossmont gave up 413 yards. Valley opened with a 41-9 victory at Harbor behind Eric Holtfreter’s 267 yards passing and three touchdowns. Vinny Walker had 79 yards rushing and a touchdown, and 76 yards receiving and a touchdown.

* ANTELOPE VALLEY (1-0) vs. CANYONS (1-0)

At Canyons, 7 p.m.

This is the last nonconference tuneup for teams that won their openers through different means. Antelope Valley rode Jason Anderson’s 215 yards rushing and two touchdowns to a 24-14 victory over Santa Monica last week. Canyons took advantage of Travis Winn’s 322 yards passing and three touchdowns to drop Citrus, 23-13. Mark Hamilton had seven receptions for 180 yards and two touchdowns. The trick now is whether each defense can stop the other team’s strong suit. Antelope Valley last season defeated the Cougars, 21-14, and leads the series, 4-3. Antelope Valley hosts Grossmont next week in a Foothill Conference opener and Canyons opens Western State Conference play at Glendale.

* MT. SAN JACINTO (1-0) vs. VENTURA (1-0)

At Ventura High, 7 p.m.

Ventura, ranked No. 11 in the state, is riding a five-game winning streak after pounding East L.A., 32-13, last week in a nonconference opener. The Pirates unleashed a balanced attack, gaining 220 yards rushing and 176 yards passing against a team that lost for the seventh time in nine games. Sophomore Travis Rogers had 164 yards in 31 carries and scored twice, and sophomore Glenn Dudley averaged 29.3 yards per completion. Ventura held East L.A. to 12 yards rushing, 142 total. Mt. San Jacinto, ranked No. 20, beat Southwest, 17-3, last week for its sixth consecutive victory. The Eagles outgained Southwest, 248-199.

* OTHER GAMES:

WSC, interdivisional: 7 p.m., West L.A. at Moorpark, Glendale at Santa Monica. Nonconference: 7 p.m., Desert at Pierce.

HIGH SCHOOL

* CLOVIS WEST (1-0) vs. WESTLAKE (1-0)

At Westlake High, 7 p.m.

Clovis West, seeking to become a national power by scheduling big-name teams in nonleague play, took a decisive step with a 24-17 victory over Mater Dei last week. Ranked No. 10 in one publication, Clovis West won its 12th consecutive game with two running backs gaining more than 100 yards. With three members of the school’s 400-meter relay team in the backfield, expect the Golden Eagles to run the ball again. Westlake opened with a solid effort against Buena, winning, 42-27, behind Julian Lambert. The senior transfer from Birmingham rushed for 124 yards and four touchdowns. Zac Wasserman completed 14 of 22 passes for 236 yards and two touchdowns. Michael Brignac and Chris Catalano are the top receivers. Linebacker Jordan Lampos heads the Warrior defense.

* HUENEME (0-1) vs. DAYTONA BEACH (FLA.) MAINLAND (1-0)

At Orlando, Fla. 4:30 p.m.

Nobody can accuse Hueneme of playing a soft nonleague schedule. A week after losing to Division I Alemany, 65-30, the Vikings have traveled across the country to face Florida’s defending District 5-A champion, which boasts one of the nation’s best quarterbacks in Brandon Sumner. A 6-4, 205-pound sophomore, Sumner passed for 19 touchdowns and rushed for 700 yards and 12 touchdowns last season. He is one of four all-state players returning for Mainland, which won its opener, 42-12. Hueneme has a game-breaker of its own in receiver-safety Keary Colbert, but he is slowed with a slightly sprained knee. Leslie Lee, a junior, rushed for 144 yards against Alemany and appears to be the latest in a talented line of Viking tailbacks. Two-way starting lineman Tyrone Tutogi is a returning All-Ventura County player.
