SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Los Alamitos scored three touchdowns in the second quarter and held on to beat Dana Hills, 21-7, in a nonleague game Friday night at Dana Hills High.

The Griffins (2-0), who have outscored opponents, 69-7, scored their first touchdown when Brian Sandi forced a fumble on a Dana Hills punt return and Adam Nauta returned the ball 35 yards for the score.

Dana Hills (0-2) appeared close to tying the game a few minutes later, when another Dolphin fumble proved costly. Billy Ewing lost the ball on the Griffin six-yard line and Los Alamitos recovered.

Los Alamitos was forced to punt on that possession, but scored two minutes later on a 48-yard touchdown pass from Mike Sanford to Jerry Wenze to go up 14-0.

Damon Johnson, who carried 30 times for 150 yards, nearly stumbled before breaking free for a 62-yard touchdown run as time expired in the first half.

“I thought we’d throw on that play,” Johnson said. “It was just a matter of getting great blocking by my line and keeping my balance.”

The Dolphins scored their touchdown on Mike Bergey’s one-yard quarterback keeper with 7:07 remaining in the game. Dana Hills has held opponents scoreless in six of eight quarters this season, but has only scored 13 points in two games.

“I know we’re the best 0-2 team in the county,” Dana Hills Coach Scott Orloff said. “Once our offense gets squared away, we’ll be a force.”

The Dolphins will get a chance to prove that next Friday when they meet Santa Margarita at Saddleback College. The Eagles, ranked No. 1 in the county this week, lost to Carlsbad, 40-20, Friday.
