Nevers, Jakosky Run to Easy Victories at Ojai Invitational

Juniors Mark Nevers of Oak Park High and Laura Jakosky of Agoura turned in the fastest boys’ and girls’ times in the Ojai Invitational cross-country meet at Lake Casitas on Saturday.

Nevers, runner-up in the state Division IV final last year, clocked 15:26 over the three-mile course in the small-schools race to defeat junior Roberto Contreras of Nordhoff by 45 seconds.

Although it was a nonscoring meet, Oak Park was impressive with five runners among the top 22 finishers.

“Oak Park looked awesome,” Agoura Coach Bill Duley said. “Nevers really ran well.”

Nevers cut 20 seconds off his second-place time in the Ventura County championships at Lake Casitas last year.

Jakosky, defending Southern Section Division II champion, clocked 18:28 in winning the girls’ large-schools race by 28 seconds over junior Kelley Hess of Thousand Oaks.

Hess led the field through the one- and two-mile marks before Jakosky surged into the lead.

The Hart girls, like the Oak Park boys, had five of the top 22 finishers.

Freshman Whitney Russell placed third in 19:14 for the Indians and freshman teammate Phaedra Miller was fifth in 19:44.

Junior Tom Kubler of Viewpoint won the boys’ large-schools race in 15:40 and junior Ali Valle of San Luis Obispo took the girls’ small-schools event in 19:14.

Woodbridge Invitational--Junior Anita Siraki of Hoover posted the fastest girls’ time of the meet in winning the Division II race at Irvine Woodbridge High.

Siraki, fourth in the state Division I final last year, clocked 17:17 over the three-mile course to defeat junior Amber Steen of Newport Harbor by 37 seconds.

Senior Valerie Flores of San Pedro, defending City Section champion, had the girls’ second-fastest time in winning the Division IV race in 17:27.

Ryan Burnett of La Canada placed third in the Division IV senior boys’ race with a time of 15:18.

MEN’S CROSS-COUNTRY

Westmont Invitational--Junior Geir Kristensen of Cal Lutheran finished second to help the Kingsmen to a third-place finish in the team standings.

Kristensen clocked 26:12 over the 8,000-meter course. Cal Lutheran had 98 points.

U.S. International won with 31 points, followed by Westmont with 35.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Cal Lutheran 4, Pomona-Pitzer 0--Alix Rucinski scored two goals and Jennifer Agostino had one goal and one assist in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game.

Cal Lutheran (3-2, 1-0 in SCIAC) is unbeaten in its last 50 SCIAC games, dating 1995. Pomona-Pitzer dropped to 1-5, 0-2.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Valencia tournament--Granada Hills totaled nine points to defeat Lancaster by a point in the eight-team tournament at Valencia High.

Junior Jasmin Dao of Granada Hills placed second in the singles competition and senior teammate Kelley Takeshita was third.

Juniors Caryn Linder and Shannon Slotnick placed second in doubles for the Highlanders.

Teams received a point for each set won.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Royal 13, Ayala 10--Derek Anderson had five goals for Royal (4-1) in the third-place game of the Riverside Poly tournament.

Royal’s Tom Onyshko had 21 saves for the Highlanders. Onyshko and Anderson were selected to the all-tournament team.

Rowland 12, Royal 7--Anderson had four goals and Onyshko had 16 saves in a semifinal game.
