Smith, a senior running back, scored three touchdowns in first half. His first, on the Eagles’ second series, finished a five-play, 63-yard drive.

After a mishandled snap on the extra-point attempt, kicker David Davenport picked up the loose ball and ran it in for two points.

Smith scored on runs of 38 and eight yards before the half for Capistrano Valley Christian (2-0), ranked second in Division XIII.

Smith needs 876 yards to break the school’s career rushing record (4,122) set by Bryant Wolfsberger from 1994-96.

“I just want to go out every game and prove myself,” Smith said. “Whether it’s to run or block for the team, as long as it helps.”

Lone Pine (1-1) did not earn a first down until late in the second quarter. Golden Eagle running back Eddie Salazar fumbled on the next play and Jamie Bray recovered for Capistrano Valley Christian.

Early in the third quarter, Smith fumbled and Lone Pine’s Ray Merchain recovered. James Brackney scored on a 53-yard run two plays later with 8:26 remaining in the third quarter for Lone Pine’s only touchdown.
