3. PENN STATE (4-0) beat Miami, 27-23. Nittany Lions enjoy their Fields of Dreams and defeat a Top 10 team on the road for first time since ’94. Next: Indiana, Saturday.

8. MIAMI (2-1) lost to Penn State, 27-23. If Hurricanes convert on fourth down late in game, they would have pulled off their biggest upset since UCLA last season. Next: at East Carolina, Saturday.

9. WISCONSIN (2-1) lost to Cincinnati, 17-12. Ron Dayne passed five guys on career rushing chart, but don’t expect the same next week. Wolverines held Dayne to season-low 53 yards last season. Next: Michigan, Saturday.

10. VIRGINIA TECH (2-0) did not play. Hokies won at Clemson, 37-0, last season, holding the Tigers to 102 yards. Michael Vick should be back at quarterback for Virginia Tech. Next: Clemson, Thursday.

14. PURDUE (3-0) beat Central Michigan, 58-16. Hall of Famer Kellen Winslow tells Fox Sports Net audience that Drew Brees is product of good system and “not a Heisman Trophy candidate.” Next: Northwestern, Saturday.

15. ARKANSAS (2-0) beat Louisiana Monroe, 44-6. Easy win, but quarterback Clint Stoerner leaves the game in fourth quarter with right shoulder injury. Next: at Alabama, Saturday.

16. KANSAS STATE (2-0) beat Texas El Paso, 40-7. Wildcats draw record crowd of 50,923 at renovated stadium. Previous record lasted one whole week. Next: at Iowa State, Saturday.

17. USC (2-0) beat San Diego State, 24-21. Not many pollsters saw USC’s opener in Hawaii and Trojans can only hope they didn’t see this debacle. Next: at Oregon, Saturday.

19. ARIZONA (2-2) lost to Stanford, 50-22. Desert Swarmed over. Wildcats must have thought it couldn’t get worse after thrashing at Penn State. It got worse. Next: at Washington State, Saturday.

20. NORTH CAROLINA STATE (3-1) lost to Florida State, 42-11. Wolfpack quarterback Jamie Barnette couldn’t reproduce the magic he had last season in upset of Seminoles. Next: at Wake Forest, Saturday.

21. UCLA (2-1) beat Fresno State, 35-21. So much for being No. 2. Drew Bennett replaces injured Cory Paus and sparks the win. Next week, Pac-10 play, in which Bruins have won 15 straight. Next: at Stanford, Saturday.

22. ARIZONA STATE (1-1) lost to New Mexico State, 35-7. Another moment of glory for the Pac-10. But then again, Sun Devils can look at rival Arizona and get a good chuckle. Next: at California, Saturday.

23. COLORADO STATE (2-1) lost to BYU, 34-13 (Thursday). Not exactly Ram tough in inaugural Mountain West Conference game. At least softball team earned split with BYU Friday. Next: New Mexico State, Oct. 2.

24. NOTRE DAME (1-3) lost to Michigan State, 23-13. Attention Bob Davie fans: Trailing by seven with just over three minutes left, Irish decide to punt from midfield on fourth and one. Next: Oklahoma, Oct. 2.

25. BRIGHAM YOUNG (2-0) beat Colorado State, 34-13 (Thursday). In two games, Kevin Feterik has compiled average numbers for a BYU quarterback--811 yards, five touchdowns. Next: Virginia, Saturday.
