L.A. County Fair Highlights

The 77th annual Los Angeles County Fair will run through Sunday at the Fairplex, two blocks north of the San Bernardino Freeway in Pomona. Horse races are run daily, with a first post time of 12:30 p.m. A sampling of events:

Concerts--Grandstand Stage

General admission to most grandstand shows is free with fair admission, but reserved grandstand, box and stage-area seats are available at all Ticketmaster locations or at (213) 480-3232, (714) 740-2000 or (805) 583-8700. All concerts begin at 8 p.m.

Contests, Special Events

* Today--Walnut and Diamond Bar Day, Community Hero ceremonies, Super Diner Stage, 6 p.m.; sheep shearing demonstrations, Shepherd’s Lane, 1, 3 and 7 p.m.; Fire Safety Olympics, Heritage Farm, 3 p.m.; Clay Carving Contest, America’s Kids, 4:30 p.m.; Doo-Wah Riders, Good Music Stage, 6 to 10 p.m.

* Thursday--La Verne Day, Community Hero ceremonies, Super Diner Stage, 6 p.m.; art demonstrations--featured artists: Ricky Maldonado, Robin Strayhorn and Bernie Granados Jr., Gallery, all day; Diaper Derby, Fairplex 4 Community Stage, 3:30 p.m.; Guess Which Wine, the Vineyard, 5:30 p.m.; high school marching band competition, Clock Tower Plaza, 6 p.m.; desserts contest, Creative Living, 7 p.m.

Fair Hours: 11 a.m.-10 p.m. through Thursday; 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Friday; 10 a.m.-11 p.m. Saturday, 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Sunday.

Admission: General adult, weekdays $9, weekends $10; over 60, $7, except on Tuesdays, $3.50; children 6-12 years, $5 weekends, free on weekdays when accompanied by a paying adult (up to three children), children 5 and under free every day; carnival wristband (10 rides) Wednesday-Friday, $15.

Parking: General, $5; preferred, $8; premium preferred (hotel lot only) $10; valet, $15.
