THE SAFETY ZONE: RESTAURANT REPORT

The environmental health division of Orange County’s Health Care Agency performs routine, unannounced inspections of the county’s more than 11,000 restaurants, markets and other food establishments. When conditions violate state law or applicable county and municipal codes, inspectors can issue notices of violation. If inspectors find during an announced recheck that conditions have not been corrected, they can effectively close the business by suspending its health permit. Health permits are reinstated as soon as the situation is corrected. Here is a rundown for August:

* Restaurant: A Whole Lot of Italy, 4521 E. Chapman Ave., Orange.

Date closed: Aug. 3. Not reopened as of Sept. 7.

Reason cited: Operating without an approved health permit.

* Restaurant: B & H Distributors, 11561 Westminster Blvd., Garden Grove.

Dates closed: Aug. 4-5.

Reason cited: Vermin infestation.

* Restaurant: Manila Trading-Supermarket, 1738 W. Chapman Ave., Orange.

Dates closed: Aug. 4-5.

Reasons cited: Massive fly infestation in the open food handling and food preparation areas; exhaust vent disconnected from water heater.

* Restaurant: La Gourmandine French Bakery, 13107 Harbor Blvd., Garden Grove.

Dates closed: Aug. 5-6.

Reason cited: Vermin infestation.

* Restaurant: Little Szechwan Restaurant, 6151 Ball Road, Cypress.

Dates closed: Aug. 9-13.

Reason cited: Heavy cockroach infestation throughout the food preparation areas.

* Restaurant: Paddy’s Pub, 15627 Brookhurst St., Westminster.

Dates closed: Aug. 10-11.

Reasons cited: Massive cockroach infestation in the dry food storage and bathroom areas; lack of adequate supply of hot water.

* Restaurant: China Town Express, 2020 N. Grand Ave., Santa Ana.

Dates closed: Aug. 10-11.

Reasons cited: Failure to comply with a notice of decision; utensils not sanitized; lack of proper food temperature control; flies on food in kitchen; utensils and food stored on the floor; food prepared on the floor; raw foods stored over ready-to-eat foods in the walk-in refrigerator.

* Restaurant: Kien Thanh, 10471 Bolsa Ave., Westminster.

Dates closed: Aug. 11-18.

Reasons cited: Main sewage line blockage resulting in raw sewage backing up onto the kitchen floor; numerous live cockroaches observed throughout the kitchen area.

* Restaurant: Quynh Huong Food to Go, 14042 Magnolia St., #101-102, Westminster.

Dates closed: Aug. 11-16.

Reason cited: Heavy cockroach infestation throughout the kitchen area.

* Restaurant: Natraj Cuisine of India, 998 S. Coast Highway, Laguna Beach.

Dates closed: Aug. 13-16.

Reasons cited: Inadequate supply of hot water; infestation of rodents; rodent droppings in food; inadequate food handling practices; food temperature violations; improper thawing of food.

Date closed: Aug. 13. Reopened the same day.

Reason cited: Broken sewer line resulting in accumulation of raw sewage on kitchen floor.

* Restaurant: Quan’s Chinese Food, 1107 N. Tustin St., Orange.

Date closed: Aug. 16. Reopened the same day.
