Brigham Young Coach LaVell Edwards signed a five-year contract extension that will keep him in Provo through 2004. Terms weren’t disclosed. Edwards has a career record of 245-91-3 and ranks eighth among active NCAA Division I coaches, winning 72% of his games. The Cougars won the 1984 national title. . . . Rutgers will be without five players, including starting halfback Jacki Crooks, for Saturday’s game against Boston College because they were suspended by Coach Terry Shea for violating team policy. . . . Suspended Nebraska wingback Shevin Wiggins pleaded not guilty to a charge of sexual assault at Lincoln, Neb., and a tentative trial date was set for Nov. 29.
