A city contractor recently charged a company nearly $5,700 to clear weeds that another company reportedly removed just a few weeks earlier for $785.

Unocal property manager Pat Ellis appeared before the City Council last week to protest the city’s hiring of a landscaping company to clear land for more than seven times the amount she said she had already paid to have it done.

Ellis said she hired Mow It Down landscaping June 15 to cut the weeds on two acres of vacant land near the Village Shopping Center Ralphs on Rose Drive and Alta Vista Street.

On June 23, a city inspector surveyed the property and said there was no evidence that work had been done. Weed Eliminator Inc., the city’s contractor, submitted a bid of nearly $5,700 to do the job, which had to be done by hand because of irrigation pipes on the site.

Ellis said she would cover that cost.
