During a recent City Council meeting, the city received a certificate of appreciation from the California Integrated Waste Management Board recognizing its efforts in diverting waste.
The state requires that all cities make an effort to recycle and reduce green waste in order to help California cut its trash in half by 2000. Purple bins were provided for residents to collect newspapers, glass and plastic.
City Manager Robert Dominguez said residents did more than their part, and the city cut waste by 35.1%, 10 percentage points more than what was required, in 1995.
By Jan. 1, the cutback must be more than 50%.
