SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Erin Broadwell is considered Cal State Northridge’s main offensive threat but had only one goal before the Matadors nonconference women’s soccer game against the Master’s College on Tuesday night.

Broadwell scored a career-high four goals and led the Matadors to their record-setting 8-0 victory over the Mustangs at North Campus Stadium.

The Matadors (5-3-1) broke their record of seven goals set in a 7-0 win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in 1995.

Northridge broke another team record with 45 shots. The previous mark of 32 was accomplished twice, in 1997 against Northern Arizona and in 1998 against the Master’s.

Broadwell’s four goals also is a school record and the Matadors set another record with nine assists.

“It boosts my confidence a lot,” Broadwell said. “I felt a little intimidated in the games before, but [Tuesday night] I took advantage of all my opportunities I had to score. Fortunately they went in.

“I never thought I’d do it. Maybe I deserved it. I’ve been hustling all summer preparing for the season. My hard work finally paid off.

After winning their first three games, the Mustangs (3-6) have dropped six in a row. They have been outscored, 21-1, during the losing streak. They haven’t scored since Sept. 8th.

Northridge didn’t allow a shot until the 34th minute and outshot the Master’s, 30-2, in the first half.

The Matadors didn’t waste any time scoring with two goals in the first nine minutes.

Broadwell scored the first in the fifth minute, with Kerrie Clavadetscher following with a goal in the ninth minute.

Broadwell added a goal in the 17th minute, Clavadetscher in the 25th and Rebecca Kiesz in the 29th for a 5-0 lead at halftime.

Broadwell added goals in the 57th and 68th minutes, extending the lead to 7-0.

“This was great for her. I knew she had it in her,” Coach Allison Lee said. “She had never had a game like this. It’s going to be a big confidence booster for her.”

Carrie Anderson scored for the Matadors in the 68th minute when she knocked in the rebound of a shot by Heidi Strauss.

The Matadors travel to Portland State (4-4) on Friday for their Big Sky Conference opener.

The Vikings are 4-4 and have lost two in a row.

“It’s not going to be a cakewalk,” Lee said. “[Tuesday night] was a great prep for it. I’ve been trying to get them to use the entire field and they did that. If we play like this against Portland State, we’ll come away with a win, but it’s not going to be easy.”

Senior sweeper Jessica Crespo did not play in the game and will be out a few weeks with a sprained medial collateral ligament suffered in 2-1 double overtime loss to Nevada Las Vegas on Sunday.
