A 25-year-old man was killed Friday after he drove his pickup truck off the Foothill Freeway into a bin full of refuse at the Golden State Freeway interchange, the California Highway Patrol said.

The man, whose name was withheld pending notification of relatives, was pronounced dead at the scene, CHP Officer Frank Sansone said. There were no passengers, he said.

The Ford Ranger was traveling west at a high rate of speed on the Foothill Freeway east of the Golden State at about 3:10 a.m. when it veered to the right. It crashed into a bin on the shoulder that was loaded with 20,000 pounds of refuse, Sansone said.
