A pedestrian was killed early Sunday morning after a hit-and-run collision on northbound Oxnard Boulevard, according to California Highway Patrol officials.

The man, whose identity was not released Sunday, was apparently attempting to cross the northbound lanes of traffic when he was struck by a vehicle.

The accident occurred about 4 a.m. north of Orchard Place. When CHP officers arrived at 5:15 a.m., they conducted an unsuccessful search for the car and driver. Officers said they also interviewed several witnesses, who reported seeing the victim’s body lying in the roadway after the collision.

The vehicle is believed to be a gray, mid-size sedan or pickup with damage to the right front fender area, including a broken turn signal and windshield, authorities said.

The Ventura County coroner’s office is conducting an autopsy. The case is still under investigation.
