Redevelopment Area Transfer Bill Approved
The San Fernando Valley would be able to maintain control over the city redevelopment areas in its jurisdiction if it breaks off from Los Angeles, under a bill approved Tuesday by the state Senate.
The bill, introduced by state Sen. Richard Alarcon (D-Sylmar) now goes to the Assembly for consideration.
Alarcon said the current state law does not allow for the transfer of control of redevelopment areas from one city to another, even though the projects often divert millions of property tax dollars from basic city services.
“Every city should be able to control projects that are within its boundary lines,” Alarcon said. “It would be ridiculous to have a new Valley city that had to answer to Los Angeles about a redevelopment project in its own territory.”
The CRA has four projects in the Valley, and is proposing to add another area later this year.
