An Oct. 2 trial was set for Boston Bruin tough guy Marty McSorley, charged with attacking Vancouver’s Donald Brashear during a game.

Attorney Bill Smart represented McSorley, who was not at Tuesday’s hearing.

Smart said he expected to call witnesses at the four-day trial, but he did not identify them.

McSorley is charged with assault with a weapon for the attack in the Feb. 21 game, in which Brashear fell to the ice and suffered a concussion after being struck in the right temple.

McSorley was suspended by the NHL for the rest of the season and playoffs, the harshest punishment handed out for an on-ice infraction.

The attack was witnessed by thousands of fans in Vancouver and was replayed repeatedly on TV.

Vancouver attorney Marvin Storrow also was at the one-minute hearing in provincial court. Storrow is representing the NHL, but said he was just observing. Storrow said the league is taking no position in the case.
