The city’s Community Services Commission approved an application by the Head Start program to compete for federal grant money.

Faye Campbell, an administrator with the Child Development Division, said the application could win the city up to $253,960 in federal funds to expand the Head Start child-care program for children who are going into kindergarten.

There are 141 children enrolled in the half-day program during the school year, with another 48 on a waiting list, city officials said.

With the grant, the Head Start program could open 34 new spots for children in need of full-day and year-round child care, as well as help fund a program expansion.

The issue now goes before the City Council on Monday, and, if approved, will go on to compete with child-care programs across the country for the federal funds, Campbell said.
