Hazlett Stumps Wolverines, 10-0
Irvine’s Chad Hazlett doesn’t have a blazing fastball. He depends more on good location and fooling hitters with pesky curveballs.
Hazlett was sharp Thursday in sixth-ranked Irvine’s 10-0 Sea View League victory over Aliso Niguel at Irvine.
Hazlett (9-1) struck out one, wriggled out of a few early jams and reclaimed the county lead in victories.
Hazlett’s only strikeout got him out of trouble in the third inning. With the score tied, 0-0, two out and two on, he caught Jeremy Burchett looking at a curveball for strike three.
Irvine (13-3, 10-1) scored twice in the bottom of the inning on an RBI groundout by Chris Sinner and a double by Chris Lewis. The Vaqueros broke it open in the fourth, scoring five runs by taking advantage of three errors and two timely hits. Lewis had a two-run single and Terry Parker also drove in a run with a single.
Parker drove in another run with a double in the the Vaqueros’ two-run sixth. Lewis finished with three RBIs.
Meanwhile, Hazlett kept Aliso Niguel off the scoreboard. He gave up seven hits and overcame some early wildness. He hit three batters in the first three innings.
Aliso Niguel is 7-8, 4-6.
