Safety for Trucks

Re “Tanker Spill Closes 101 Freeway,” April 10.

I was shaken by the terrible spill that resulted when a tanker overturned on the Ventura Freeway in Mussel Shoals, causing a delay in traffic for hours and despoiling the beach and marine life.

Many motorists took alternative routes, invading the limited road space in the Ojai Valley. One of my neighbors spent three hours making the trip home from the Cliff House to Newbury Park.

Fortunately, the driver of the tanker was not injured. He said he had fallen asleep at the wheel.

Ironically, the trucking industry is prevailing upon Congress to increase the truckers’ working day from 8 to 10 hours--as if the mammoth size of the trucks isn’t hazardous enough.

Our members of Congress must be alerted to block this legislation proposed by the industry to prevent further spills and truck accidents.
