Upon Further Review, Anson Comes Up Short
For many years, Cap Anson, who retired in 1897, was credited with 3,081 hits until a study by “Total Baseball,” the official encyclopedia of major league baseball, discovered Anson was incorrectly credited with 20 hits in 1879 and was given too many hits in 1887, when walks were counted as hits. He is now credited with 2,995 hits, dropping him out of the 3,000-hit club. Thus, Cal Ripken Jr. became the 23rd player to reach 3,000 hits Saturday.
