Fan Refrain: Take Me Out of Ballgame

Share

Opening day 2000 at Dodger Stadium provided me with some unforgettable memories. Like the fights in the stands. And the legions of drunk fans and their verbal abuse of Cincinnati Red supporters. And I can’t leave out the debris raining down from the upper levels.

There is one positive, however. I think we’ve found a home for the Raiders in Los Angeles.

Let’s see. Some idiot spends $295 to watch a game from behind home plate at Dodger Stadium. Then he uses his cell phone and waves at the television camera for three innings. Can you say . . . moron?

Dodger game radio broadcasters are so full of trivia stories that the game is incidental. Rick Monday and Ross Porter act as though events on the field are irksome interruptions of the story they are telling.

On Saturday, April 15, in the late innings with the game on the line, Monday spent an entire inning on scores of other games. My wife, who is a great Dodger fan, kept asking, “What’s going on?” No wonder so few of my friends listen to the radio broadcasts.

We need announcers who can report what’s happening on the field interestingly so we can visualize what’s going on.

Thank goodness for the few TV games, when we can cut off the sound and just watch the game.
