Two pedestrians were treated at local hospitals Saturday for serious injuries after each was struck by a car in separate accidents in Orange.

Walter Saegebrecht, 86, was hit by an 86-year-old motorist at a crosswalk on La Veta Avenue while making his way home from church, said Orange police Sgt. Larry Pore.

Saegebrecht suffered a broken right arm and left leg in the 7:20 a.m. accident. He was taken to UC Irvine Medical Center and listed in guarded condition.

About 12 hours earlier, Leona Gonzalez was struck by a sport utility vehicle as she ran across Tustin Street, Pore said. Gonzalez and at least one friend were standing on a median when she darted across the street without seeing the oncoming car, Pore said.

Gonzalez, 44, suffered major head injuries. Paramedics took her to Western Medical Center-Santa Ana, where officials said she remained in critical condition Saturday.

Police are investigating but said they do not believe that alcohol or drugs were a factor in either accident.
