Group Seeks to Revitalize Industrial Corridor
A new task force of elected officials and government agencies on Friday joined a growing effort to revitalize the county’s old industrial core, which extends from the ports to downtown Los Angeles.
Called the Alameda-710 Corridor Economic Development Task Force, the panel, which announced the effort at a luncheon in Long Beach, wants to reverse the economic decline of industrial and commercial areas along Alameda Street and the Long Beach Freeway.
Some say that revitalizing the area could help relieve a potential shortage of modern industrial space. Based on the county’s resurgent economy, forecasts indicate that at least 1,200 acres of new industrial space will be needed every year to accommodate gains in local manufacturing.
The task force includes the county Board of Supervisors, officials from 15 cities, state Sen. Betty Karnette (D-Long Beach), the Gateway Cities Council of Governments, the Alameda Corridor Transportation Authority, the county Community Development Commission and the Los Angeles Economic Development Commission.
