Yim Pulls Upsets, Pushes Into Round of 16

Robert Yim of Glendale upset No. 3-seeded Doug Stewart of Malibu, 6-2, 6-2, in the fourth round of the U.S. Tennis Assn. Boys’ 16 Super National Hardcourt Championships on Tuesday in Kalamazoo, Mich.

Yim, a sophomore at Glendale High, advanced to the round of 16 with his second upset in two days. He defeated No. 18-seeded Stephen Amritraj of Calabasas, 7-5, 6-0, on Monday. Yim beat P.J. Passalacqua of Naples, Fla., 6-0, 6-1, in the second round of the 256-player draw following a first-round bye.

No. 2-seeded Prakash Amritraj of Encino defeated Brett Joelson of Plano, Texas, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, in another fourth-round match, and Lester Cook of Sherman Oaks defeated Nick Meythaler of Owensboro, Ky., 6-4, 6-1.

Darrin Cohen of Lafayette eliminated Justin Montgomery of Oxnard, 6-2, 6-2.

Cook defeated Val Banada of Miami, 7-5, 6-3, in the second round and Rowan Reynolds of Saint Leonard, Md., 6-2, 7-5, in the third round.

Prakash Amritraj defeated Zachary Smith of Rochester, Minn., 6-1, 6-2, in the third round and beat Ryan Young of Charleston, S.C., 7-6 (2), 6-2, in the second round.

Montgomery beat No. 15-seeded Colin Purcell of Louisville, Ky., 7-5, 6-3, in the second round and beat Jimmy Moore of Purchase, N.Y., 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, in the third round.

Adrian Mardyks of Camarillo lost, 6-1, 6-3, to Joelson in the third round.

Jason Nguyen of Chatsworth and Jesse Ferlianto of Canyon Country lost in the second round Sunday.

In doubles, the second-seeded Amritraj cousins defeated Philip Charm of Concord, Mass., and Alexander Jacobs of Westport, Conn., in a third-round match, 6-2, 6-2, to advance to the round of 16.

Cook and Derrick Bauer of Marina del Rey, the third-seeded team, defeated Morgan Bauer of New York and Byron Cole of Encinitas, 7-5, 6-3.

In the boys’ 18 division, No. 12-seeded Travis Rettenmaier of Camarillo blanked Brandon Gill of Indianapolis, 6-0, 6-0, to become the only player from the region in the age group to advance to the round of 32.

No. 8-seeded Jeremy Wurtzman of Rochester, N.Y., beat Amir Marandy of Woodland Hills, 6-2, 6-0, and Bobby Reynolds of Aoworth, Ga., upset No. 14-seeded Philip Sheng of Thousand Oaks, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
