A rattlesnake bit a 2-year-old Yorba Linda girl Wednesday afternoon when the child crawled into a backyard playhouse, police said.

The girl, who was bitten on the foot, was taken to Kaiser Permanente Anaheim Medical Center, where she was listed in good condition late Wednesday, authorities said.

Her name was not released because of her age.

The incident happened at 1:47 p.m. in the 23000 block of Azela Circle, a development west of the rugged Chino Hills. The girl’s mother, who was in the backyard at the time, heard a scream, grabbed the child and called paramedics.

Police say snakebites in Orange County are rare.

“I’ve been here 18 years and have never seen one there before,” said Sgt. Monica Anderson, a spokeswoman for the Brea Police Department, which patrols Yorba Linda. Anderson said police believe the snake crawled into the playhouse to get out of the hot sun.

The snake was captured and killed by animal control officers.
