120 Drivers Get Free Metrolink Passes

About 120 county residents who normally drive to work in Los Angeles have accepted a Metrolink offer to commute by train during the Democratic National Convention next week.

The residents were screened to be sure they don’t normally take the train to work, said Metrolink spokesman Francisco Oaxaca of the “Elect to Ride Metrolink” program.

“We are trying to do as much as we can to relieve the congestion downtown during the convention,” Oaxaca said. “The ultimate goal is that they will keep using the train once they’ve tried it.”

Metrolink officials approached area employers who could recommend employees to take the train. Oaxaca said the agency has given out all of the available free passes--about 1,020.

Metrolink, in its seventh year of service, is the commuter train service for five counties--Ventura, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino.
