Cleveland quarterback Ty Detmer was lost for the season Saturday night when he ruptured his right Achilles’ tendon while scrambling to avoid a sack in the Browns’ 19-6 exhibition loss to the Chicago Bears at Chicago.

Detmer, 32, a former Heisman Trophy winner at Brigham Young, was entering his ninth season and had played well against Philadelphia in the exhibition opener. He was hurt on the third scrimmage play of the second half.

The loss of Detmer leaves the Browns thin at quarterback, with only starter Tim Couch and rookie Spergon Wynn on their roster.

“We’ve been chewed up pretty good. We’ll look at the emergency list of quarterbacks,” Cleveland Coach Chris Palmer said.

Detmer played four years with Green Bay, two with the Eagles and one with San Francisco before joining the Browns last season.

Detmer has completed 454 of 795 career passes for 5,445 yards with 31 touchdowns during his career.

The Bears were sparked by a 41-yard touchdown pass from Cade McNown to Eddie Kennison. Chicago sacked Couch three times.

In other exhibition games, the Baltimore Ravens defeated the New York Jets, 10-0, at Baltimore. Jet quarterback Vinny Testaverde’s first pass was intercepted by Chris McAlister and returned 33 yards for a touchdown. The former Baltimore quarterback lasted only two series before leaving because of a hyperextended left big toe. The injury is not considered serious.

At San Diego, rookie Ronney Jenkins scored on his second 86-yard kickoff return in as many games and powered his way for a two-yard touchdown as the San Diego Chargers routed the Minnesota Vikings, 31-7. Ryan Leaf made his first competitive appearance in San Diego since midway through his troubled rookie season of 1998 and directed the Chargers on a scoring drive, although it was only a five-yard drive thanks to Scott Turner’s interception.

Edgerrin James rushed for 53 yards, including a 29-yard carry. The Saints’ Ricky Williams rushed for 66 yards and caught four passes for another 53.

At Pontiac, Mich., Jason Hanson’s 50-yard field goal with 5:42 remaining capped a second-half comeback and lifted the Detroit Lions to a 15-13 victory over the Buffalo Bills.

The surgery could sideline McDuffie for the first six weeks of the regular season. The toe required surgery in February to repair a torn tendon. . . . Safety Eugene Robinson, a three-time Pro Bowl selection, signed with the Carolina Panthers. Robinson, 37, is a 15-year NFL veteran and the league’s active leader in interceptions with 56.
