Lackey Keeps Climbing Through System

Pitcher John Lackey continues on a fast-track in the Angel organization. He went 5 2/3 innings in Erie’s 13-4 victory over Bowie Thursday night. Lackey, the Angels’ first pick in the 1999 draft is 3-0 with a 2.63 earned-run average in five starts for the double-A SeaWolves.

Lackey began the season with Cedar Rapids, a lower-level Class-A team. He was 3-2 with a 2.08 ERA in five starts before being promoted to Class-A Lake Elsinore.

Lackey, a 6-foot-5, 200-pound right-hander, was 6-6 with a 3.40 ERA in 15 starts with the Storm.

He has 166 strikeouts in 158 1/3 innings.

Brad Downing, the son of former Angel Brian Downing, is the Pioneer League’s leading hitter. Downing was hitting .350 with four home runs and 21 runs batted in for the Class-A Hawks.

Pitcher Brandon Emanuel, a second-round pick in 1998, is expected to undergo reconstructive surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right elbow.

Emanuel is 4-10 with a 6.27 ERA for Lake Elsinore this season.
