A Los Angeles Police Department officer was in serious condition Tuesday after being critically injured when his motorcycle was rear-ended on the Santa Ana Freeway in Anaheim, officials said.
Michael J. Almasy, 33, was at UCI Medical Center in Orange with a spinal fracture, a spleen injury and a broken collarbone, hospital spokeswoman Lauren Bechen said. The officer also suffered several cuts on his head in the accident, which happened about 10:45 p.m. Monday.
Almasy was traveling south on the freeway near the Lincoln Avenue offramp and had just changed lanes when he was struck by a 1991 Dodge Ram pickup, investigators said. The driver of the truck, Matt J. Wolf, 34, of Whittier, was not hurt.
