The tug-of-war over a new roadside marquee for the recently renamed Verizon Wireless Amphitheater will resume today when Irvine planning commissioners scrutinize the sign for the third time.

At the 6:30 p.m. planning commission meeting, Promotional Signs of Lake Forest will present its revised design for a 38-foot sign facing the southbound side of the San Diego Freeway.

The amphitheater’s owners want to replace the venue’s roadside sign, which is showing its age and bears the site’s former name, Irvine Meadows Amphitheater.

At the July 20 meeting, commissioners asked the designers to make several changes to the sign, including adding the name of the city and directions to the amphitheater.

T.J. Johnston, an executive for Promotional Signs, said the owners of the amphitheater have been reluctant to include Irvine on the sign because they want to distance themselves from the previous name.

The meeting will be in the City Hall Council Chamber, 1 Civic Center Drive.
