With school only two weeks away, the immunization clock is ticking for seventh-graders in the Capistrano Unified School District.

Many incoming seventh-graders still haven’t shown proof that they have received two state-mandated immunizations, district spokeswoman Julie Jennings said.

Without the shots, students can’t start school. All seventh-graders need to prove they’ve begun a three-shot series of hepatitis B immunizations and have completed their second measles, mumps and rubella shot before they can register for and attend classes, according to a state law that took effect in July 1999.

About 140 students received immunizations this month at free, weekly clinics the district provides, Jennings said. Capistrano Unified will hold an extra clinic Aug. 30 to meet last-minute demand, she said.
