Costa Mesa’s Schwartz Wins Speedway Event

Bobby Schwartz of Costa Mesa won the four-lap scratch main event in front of 2,800 in the weekly speedway motorcycle program at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa Saturday.

Gary Hicks of Riverside was second, Charlie Venegas of San Bernardino third and Shawn McConnell of Brea fourth.

Ben Walker of Santa Clarita won the 75-lap NASCAR Super Late Model race before a crowd of 4,899 at Irwindale Speedway on Saturday night. Walker took the lead on the fifth lap and finished 4.46 seconds in front of second-place Tommy Fry.

Walker had a seven-second lead on lap 53 when the caution came out for a spin. On the restart on lap 57, with five lapped cars between him and Fry, Walker bolted out in front in his Airsep Racing Ford Taurus.

Greg Voigt of Santa Barbara, the points leader, finished third and still holds a 44-point edge over Walker. The championship will be decided in the next two weeks. The win was Walker’s sixth of the year.

Terry Young edged his younger brother Deyon to win the 40-lap American Race Trucks race.

Rip Michels of Mission Hills won his eighth race of the year, winning the 30-lap NASCAR Grand American Modifieds race.

Greg Edenholm of Agoura held off J.J. Ercse and Walt Johnson in the final laps to win the 20-lap USAC Western States Three-Quarter Midget race.
