The body of a 93-year-old woman who lived with her 72-year-old daughter was found Friday morning inside a refrigerator at their home in the Athens area.

Homicide investigators discovered the body about 7:30 a.m. at a house in the 200 block of West 127th Street, said Sgt. Vanette Ford, a spokeswoman for the Sheriff’s Department. Athens is an unincorporated part of the South Bay.

Deputies said they have not yet determined how the woman died, or when. They were looking for her daughter Friday night to help answer those questions, they said.

Authorities said they found the refrigerator in an upstairs bedroom shortly after neighbors called police, saying that they had not seen the older woman for a while.

The daughter had told neighbors that her mother had married, deputies said. Other neighbors told investigators that the two women were very close.

The mother’s name was not released Friday night because authorities were still trying to locate next of kin.

A department spokesman said investigators have not ruled out the possibility of a natural death. An autopsy is pending.
