The Unspoken Legacy of Thanksgiving

Share

As I was reading “Thanksgiving in a Tepee Encampment” (Nov. 23) and waiting for the Thanksgiving meal I was cooking to be ready, my first thought was: “Why isn’t this article on the front page?” I think it really does speak to how uncomfortable it is for all of us to remember that Thanksgiving has not been as inclusive as we would like to believe and that with that first feast, an entire culture was pushed into obscurity. For me, that hurts.

As an African American woman, I am very sensitive to what happens to those who don’t always have a voice or part in the wealth of this country. Looking at that article helped me remember that there is still so much to be done. I am glad they have those tepees on the Mall. I hope many more will join in next year. If we can’t be honest about what our history really is and why we do the things we do, how can we expect our children--who are our legacy--to ever do anything different or better?
