New Traffic Lights to Save City Cash

New traffic signals may save the city an estimated $54,000 a year on electricity.

City Council members will vote tonight on purchasing and installing 1,500 signal units for about $171,000. The new modules are more energy efficient than the current incandescent lights, since they emit what are called light emitting diodes, or LED.

The LED units would replace traffic lights in signals at the city’s 62 intersections. If council members vote to approve the project, installation would begin in February.

Council members meet at 7 p.m. in council chambers at the Civic Center, 8200 Westminster Blvd.
