A Los Angeles police officer was charged with drunk driving and hit-and-run driving in connection with an off-duty traffic accident, city attorney officials said Wednesday.

Humberto Angel Najera, 27, a member of a narcotics unit in the Los Angeles Police Department’s Van Nuys Division, is scheduled to be arraigned Dec. 15 in Superior Court in Van Nuys.

Najera was arrested after police said he drove through a red light and collided with another car at Sherman Way and Wilber Avenue in Reseda on Nov. 24. The other driver was not seriously injured.

Police found Najera about two blocks away with standing by his car. Investigators believe Najera wanted to flee but his car was disabled, said Assistant City Atty. Richard Schmidt.

After an LAPD sergeant smelled alcohol on Najera’s breath, he was taken to the LAPD’s West Valley station, where he was booked after failing to complete sobriety tests and registering a blood-alcohol level of 0.10%, Schmidt said.
