Police Close PCH for Gas Line Break

Share

Traffic was snarled for hours Friday night on Pacific Coast Highway after workers excavating a sewer pipe hit a gas line. Police closed both sides of the highway along parts of Santa Monica and Pacific Palisades.

Firefighters were at the rupture site using water to keep the gas from igniting, said Santa Monica Police Lt. Ray Cooper.

The construction work was part of a $22.1-million effort to repair an 8,000-foot stretch of earthquake-damaged sewer line that runs under PCH north of Santa Monica.

An estimated 75,000 cars pass through that corridor each day.
