No Point-Guard Switch for Kapono

While the Bruins were thrilled by the show Jason Kapono put on as a point guard Saturday, and while they continue to search for consistency at shooting guard, they’re not so bold as to consider installing Kapono at the point and moving Earl Watson to shooting guard.

With Watson on the bench because of foul trouble, Kapono directed a decisive 15-1 run during Saturday’s 84-64 victory over Hawaii. But Kapono is first and foremost a shooter, so Coach Steve Lavin said the 6-foot-8 forward would play point guard only in limited stretches.

“His size is a great advantage there, because he can see over the top of defenses,” Lavin said. “But you worry about him getting worn down and not having the legs to shoot.”

After guard Jason Flowers played 19 minutes and had four assists in a Nov. 15 exhibition, Lavin said Flowers had “worked himself into the rotation.” In the regular season, Flowers has played four minutes, two each against Cal State Northridge and Hawaii.

Lavin said Flowers “hasn’t done anything wrong” but figured to see action only in situations when the Bruins need a small, quick lineup. Flowers is playing despite bone spurs in his right foot, a condition he said doctors detected last spring.

“I just have to stay ready and wait until I’m called upon,” Flowers said. “If I’m not ready, I might not get another chance.”

In order to avoid conflicts with final examinations, Lavin has scheduled practice this week at 5:30 a.m. Hey, if you’re already up all night cramming, why not?
