Assistance Is Sought for Various Charities
City employees, busy as elves this month with various holiday charity events, are asking residents to join the effort.
People are being asked to donate new, unwrapped toys to the Fire Department’s Spark of Love annual drive, which will benefit local families. Items can be dropped at the central station, 11301 Acacia Parkway, or at any of the other seven city stations. Last year, the Fire Department collected more than 5,500 toys.
The Fire Department is also asking Garden Grove-based charitable groups to call (714) 741-5600 if they need any toys.
City Hall’s annual Adopt-A-Family program is underway. Last year, 19 families received baskets of food, money, toys and clothing from city departments and local businesses, as part of the adoption program. The project is operated through the Orange County Regional One-Stop Center, which serves county residents who are searching for employment.
The city’s annual Employee Charitable Giving Campaign, benefiting United Way of Orange County and the Community Health Charities organization, is also underway. Last year, the city raised more than $23,000 for area families.
And finally, the Police Department has begun its annual HUGS (Hearts Uniting Grandparents and Grandchildren) campaign. Residents are being asked to donate items to local residents, who can, in turn, give those gifts to their grandchildren through Lutheran Social Services.
Police officers are also involved in the HOPE (Helping Others Prepare for Eternity) program, aimed at helping needy single-parent households.
